What is the difference between management and leadership? I can tell you this, there have been countless books written on the subject and I don't know if we are any closer to understanding the real differences.
Peter Drucker said, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things". One thing we CAN agree on is that there is a difference in the duties and responsibilities of management and leadership. I believe that if we are to be successful in business today, we must understand the differences and master the skills that each role requires.
Allow me to give you my perspective, which is one that comes from 15 years of experience in leadership as a sales manager.
1) Management is about getting results through processes. In the management role we are responsible for creating, implementing and monitoring the processes that will produce success. Whether it is advertising, marketing, hiring, sales (and the list goes on), as managers it is our duty to ensure that each category has a process in place that produces a measurable result. When the metrics are in place, we can then hold our people accountable for their actions. You can't move what you don't measure!
2) Leadership is about getting results through people. My mentor John Maxwell says, "Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others". As leaders, we achieve organizational success by helping our people succeed in their role. This involves coaching, mentoring, equipping and so on. This will involve building relationships with your people and getting to know what their goals are and what motivates and inspires them. Remember, if you are leading and no one is following, then you are simply taking a hike!
I have witnessed many capable managers that never made the transition from managing to leading. I believe that if you are to have success, you must be effective at both roles and become good at "Leaderment" (I don't think that is actually a word, but if it catches on...remember you heard it here first).
