The ABC's of Modeling Leadership

The old saying, “Do as I say, not as I do”, is a real sign that a leader is stuck relying on his/her rank for influence. It has proven to be ineffective in parenting as well as in business. If you want your people to perform, YOU must perform. Leading by example is easier said than done sometimes. Here are 3 key areas a leader should model for his/her people.
A – Actions: If you want your people to take action, then you need to get out from behind your desk and show them you know how to take action yourself. There is an old saying, “The speed of the leader is the speed of the pack”. If you want your team to perform at a higher level, then you must show the way. Once you take the initiative, you will earn the respect of your team and therefore increase your leadership influence with them.
B – Behaviors: Someone’s outward behavior is a byproduct of their current attitude. If you desire to change the behavior of your people, create an environment for change by modeling the attitudes you desire from them. Change begins at the top. Change your attitude, change the behavior of your team.
C – Choices: It is our choices that produce our results. If you are not satisfied with the results you are getting as a leader, then make sure the choices you are making is setting the example that you want your people to emulate. To get better results, make better choices.
Pretty simple huh? Once again, as leaders we must constantly evaluate our team as well as our own actions, behaviors and choices. Take some time this week and evaluate how well you are modeling these 3 areas for your team. YOU CAN DO IT!
